Dr. Weir-Thompson
The initial assessment usually lasts for two hours. A complete biopsychosocial assessment is completed for all clients. Information gathered is used to assist in providing the most effective counseling theory based on diagnosis, treatment modality, and the needs and goals of the client.
Counselor and client meet on a weekly basis to accomplish the goal set based on information gathered and evaluated from the initial assessment. Individual sessions last for 40 minutes. Each week is specially created to assist the client to achieve their goals. The number of sessions is based on the needs and progress of the client, which varies between 4 to 12 sessions.
Couples and family therapy assesses the individual personality style of each person to determine how to promote respect, love, and understanding. Assessment of practices that reward unfavorable behavior will be conducted. As a team (counselor, couple/family members) strategies are created and implemented.
On a monthly basis, group sessions are created to provide individuals with an environment to interact with others who are in the same situation. The groups act as a support network and help members develop social skills, cope with negative experiences, receive encouragement, create a sense of belonging, learn how to express their issues, and accept criticism.
